Beth Bernstein is the fifth of Carol and Isadore Bernstein’s six children. She is the youngest of the five. She was born and reared in Columbia, where she grew up in the same neighbourhood where she now resides. Her education was provided by Richland County School District Two, which she and her siblings attended. After graduating from Richland Northeast High School in 1991, Beth went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia in 1992 and her law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law the following year. After graduating from law school, she joined forces with her father and brother, Lowell Bernstein, to establish what is now known as Bernstein and Bernstein, LLC, where they continue to practise law today. Beth has been involved in her community for the most of her life. Beth’s parents, who were both politically and civically engaged in Columbia before their deaths, instilled these ideals in her. Beth presently serves on the board of directors of the Palmetto Health Foundation Cancer Center and is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Columbia, among other positions. Her most recent honours include selection to the Liberty Fellowship class of 2015, as well as recognition as one of Business Monthly’s 50 Most Influential People in 2012. Former President of the Richland County Bar Association, she has also served on many boards, including the Three Rivers Heritage and Music Foundation, Columbia Jewish Federation, Beth Shalom Synagogue, Columbia Jewish Day School, and the South Carolina Philharmonic. Leader Columbia, where she received her bachelor’s degree in 1998, and she was named one of Columbia’s top “20 under 40” young professionals in 2006. Beth Sanders is married to Rip Sanders, who is also a lawyer at the same firm as her, and the couple has two children, Caroline, 9, and Isabel, 5. Caroline is the older of the two girls, while Isabel is the younger. Bernstein has been a Democratic member of the South Carolina House of Representatives since November 2012, when he was first elected. Bernstein is also a partner in the firm Bernstein & Bernstein Attorneys at Law, where he practises law.
